Understanding the classifications of wine may be a bit
confusing when you are just learning about wine. When referring
to the types of wine made, wine-makers use the term "varietal."
There are many variants to choose from. Wines can be named
according to the wine-maker and the vintage. Vintage indicates
the year the grapes were grown and the wine-maker generally
indicates where the wine is made. Most wine names are derived
from the grapes from which they are made.
When you see ads for wines or when you are in
the company of people who appreciate wine, you will find that a
good quality wine will enhance your meal and dining
pleasure.
The leading exporters of wine are France and
Italy. There are a number of countries that produce wine and
export it ot the world including Spain, Portugal, Australia,
South Africa, Chile, and the United States among others.
To determine the type of wine that may be best
for you, you should taste different types.
Aperitif
Vermouth and dry sherry are examples of an
aperitif. These wines are usually drunk as an appetizer before
a meal.
Dessert Wine
A dessert wine complements the dessert serving
of the meal. Port is generally served as a dessert wine with
chocolate dishes. Sweet sherry is also an example of a dessert
wine.
Red Wine
When serving a hearty meal, such as meals with
red meat or pasta, red dinner wines are best. A popular brand
is Cabernet Sauvignon.
Rosé Dinner
Wine
This variety of wine
is known as "blush" or pink wine. The color is lighter than
red wine and the flavor is sweeter.
Sparkling
Wine
The most popular
sparkling wine is champagne. Sparkling wine is a clear,
bubbly liquid and is often used for celebrations and festive
occasions. Champagne is made from white or red grapes and is
dry and light. The taste is sweet.
Table
Wine
These wines
generally have no more than 14 or 15 percent of alcohol.
Table wines can be red, white, or pink.
White
wine
The natural aroma of
food is enhanced when served with a chilled, white wine.
Examples of white wines are Chardonnay and
Chablis.
Wines may also be
used in preparing dishes. These are known as cooking wines
or cooking sherry. These wines are not purchased for
drinking because they contail salt and other preservatives.
Preservatives are added because the life of one bottle may
extend over a period of time. Most professional chefs use
inexpensive, drinkable wines when they prepare
food.
For a rule of thumb,
white wine is excellent when you are having chicken or fish
as a meal. Red wine is used with red meat dishes.
Determine the type
of wine you like by tasting the different varieties of each
type. What you purchase is based on your personal
preference.
